Puri Jagannath Temple History
Puri Jagannath’s history extends back many centuries. The copper plates unearthed in the Puri Jagannath Temple belonged to the Ganga Dynasty, which was ruled by Anantavarman Chodaganga Dev of Kalinga at the time. The current Puri Jagannath temple was erected in 1174E by King Ananga Bhima Dev.
According to legend, King Indradyumna of Malwa had a dream in which he saw Lord Vishnu in his full form at Utkala (Orissa’s old name).
He delegated the task of finding this form to Vidyapati. Vidyapati came across the tribal village and learned about the devotion of the Nila Madhava, thus he married the chief’s daughter. The tribals led him to the location of the Nila Madhava.
Vidyapati told the king of the location of worship, but when the King went there on his own, the Nila Madhava vanished. Lord Vishnu, moved by his plight, sent him a heavenly message instructing him to travel to the Puri shoreline and carve a picture of Lord Jagannath from a log of wood floating on the waves.
Lord Vishnu came as a carpenter and requested that he be left alone in a chamber for 21 days so that he could create the picture. However, at the Queen’s request, the chamber was opened early, revealing just the incomplete images of the three gods and the Sudarsana Chakra.
